My favorite doctor
Monday, Dec. 01, 2003, 12:24 p.m.

There's a doctor at my work who is a very interesting character. I'm quite fond of him and I found out, from others at work, that he's actually known nation-wide for his ability and knowledge in his field. That amazed me. Not because I don't think the man's competent or skilled (quite the opposite), but simply because he's such a quiet, unassuming man who genuinely cares about the people around him, whether patients, colleagues or hospital staff. And trust me, this is a rare and treasured thing with doctors at our hospital. For the most part, our medical staff is exceedingly rude, arrogant, and overly fond of self-praise. This man is a breath of fresh air and, the other day, I couldn't help but smile as I saw him pull up next to me in his car... something that looked like he'd bought it back in the early 80's. It had rust on the sides and it was this little, unpretentious car that, frankly, I probably would have called a junker. It wasn't in bad shape, by any means, but it wasn't the glossy, sleek, "Hey, look at me and how much money I have" machines that pretty much the rest of our doctors drive. I know it's not a money issue. I've seen him buying lunch for whoever (whomever? I never did get the grammar on that quite right...) he's sitting with on numerous occasions. I think it's because there's nothing wrong with the car's engine and he sees no reason to get rid of it when it still works perfectly well, even if it's not the fashionable thing to do. Who knows, maybe I'm just spinning stories in my head, but, honestly, I think it would be very fitting with his character.
