What kind of club is it again? Ok then, shush! Ok, I give up. I can't find a link to it in the news via Google and I'm too lazy to try anything else. I heard a snippet of the news on a Christian radio station this morning, reporting factually (in other words, not getting all emotional or outraged) that a high school Christian club called "The Truth" was being banned based on two factors. One: the name. The school objected to it being called The Truth as they felt that was discriminatory. I'm not particularly going to address that issue because I can understand that point, although I don't agree with it. What I do want to talk about is item #2. Two: The club demanded that club officers (President, VP, Secretary, etc.) be Christian. You wouldn't object to a good grades club excluding someone with a D-average from leadership, right? If the foundational basis of this club is Christianity rather than good grades, why shouldn't their criteria be acceptable? If I were a member of a good grades club, I would not be pleased to be represented by someone with a D-average. Or, if I were a member of a Latino pride club, you can imagine my lack of enthusiasm for an officer of said club who was not, in fact, a Latino. Expecting this group to change their standards because it's "discriminatory" is ridiculous! Absurd! And utterly unfair. The club itself makes no bones about what kind of club it is. If you are not interested in Christianity, you wouldn't join it! Plain and simple. Therefore, having the club leadership required to be Christians is neither discriminatory nor debatable! Sorry, this just got my dander up a bit... |
